Inside the Dahlia Intensive at Stone Hollow Farmstead
A Behind-the-Scenes Look at Our Exclusive Workshop
Inside the Dahlia Intensive at Stone Hollow Farmstead
Some experiences are too special not to share, and our Dahlia Intensive is one of them. Twice a year, we open the farm to a small group of passionate growers—from absolute beginners to seasoned flower farmers — who come from near and far to immerse themselves in the art of growing dahlias.
This past Sunday, we hosted our largest group yet, and it was a joy to have so many like-minded Dahlia lovers gathered in one place. No matter their level of experience, everyone arrived with a shared excitement to learn, ask questions, and exchange ideas. These conversations — rooted in a mutual love for growing — made the day meaningful.

A Day at the Dahlia Intensive
From the moment guests arrive at Stone Hollow Farmstead, we want them to feel welcomed, inspired, and at ease — a chance to step away from the rush of daily life and immerse themselves in a slower, more intentional rhythm.
Morning Welcome & Breakfast
We began the day with a farm-fresh breakfast, giving everyone time to settle in and connect before diving into the morning session. We love using this time to bring guests together over simple, thoughtful food — ingredients sourced from the land and from those who share our values. Eggs from our farm, seasonal fruit, house-made preserves, and local cheeses make for a beautiful way to begin.
Dahlia Education & Hands-On Learning
With the morning still cool, we gathered to discuss the foundations of dahlia growing — covering topics like tuber selection, soil preparation, and best practices for healthy, thriving plants. As the sun rose higher, we made our way to the greenhouse to warm up and explore another essential aspect of dahlia cultivation — cuttings.
This transition from study to hands-on learning always feels natural, mirroring how a grower moves through the seasons — observing, planning, and then putting knowledge into practice.
A Farm-Fresh Lunch & More Learning
After a full morning in the fields, we gathered for a beautiful, seasonal lunch, enjoying the sun and the conversation that flowed so easily among fellow growers.
We take great pride in preparing meals that reflect the season — fresh greens, herbs clipped from the garden, house-made dressings, and warm, comforting elements that bring it all together. A meal at the farm always feels like an extension of what we do — a way to celebrate the land and the hands that tend it.
An Afternoon in the Fields
In the afternoon, we walked the fields and gardens, discussing not just dahlia growing but the broader landscape of farming —
how each season brings its own challenges and rewards. Returning to the garden tables, we closed the day in the warmth of the afternoon sun, answering final questions and sharing reflections
Why This Event is So Special
Our Dahlia Intensives are more than just a class — they are one of the only ways to experience the farm in person. There is something deeply restorative about learning in a space where plants and people are growing side by side, about tending the soil while tending new connections.
Whether you come to gain practical knowledge or simply to be immersed in the beauty of the farm, it’s always a day of learning, inspiration, and community that we look forward to hosting year after year.
